When a child should see an eye doctor

Children rarely complain about their eyesight because they have nothing to compare it with, so watch their behavior. Book an eye exam if your child:

  • sits very close to screens or bends low over their notebook;
  • squints to see the board or things in the distance;
  • often rubs their eyes, tires quickly when reading or gets headaches after school;
  • has an eye that turns in or drifts outward.

Even without complaints, check your child’s vision before school starts. If your child already wears glasses, the doctor will check that they are still right. Read more on the pediatric eye exam page.

All the equipment your child may need is here at the center in Brovary, from the autorefractor to the Optovue RTVue XR Avanti scanner for OCT. If your child needs vision therapy, the eye-muscle training course also takes place here, under a doctor’s supervision. For children with nearsightedness it is part of our myopia control program and, together with glasses or lenses, helps slow its progression.

If your child has injured an eye, if the eye is suddenly very red or painful, or if vision has dropped sharply, call +380 97 729 45 05 at once. For a serious injury, call an ambulance on 103.

How to prepare your child for the visit

A few simple steps help a child stay calm, which also makes the results more reliable:

  • explain beforehand that the doctor will ask your child to name pictures or letters and to look into a few instruments;
  • plan the visit for a time when your child is rested and not hungry;
  • for little ones, bring a favorite toy, water and a snack;
  • if your child wears glasses, be sure to bring them.

If the doctor uses drops that dilate the pupils to measure refraction accurately, close-up vision may stay blurry for a while and bright light may feel uncomfortable, so it is worth bringing a cap or sunglasses just in case.

Appointments for adults

Dr. Sydorenko also sees adults, which is convenient for families. If you want her to examine your child and a parent, mention it when you book and we will find a joint time. The adult eye exam page explains what it covers.
