What happens during the visit

The doctor tailors the tests to your child’s age, symptoms and clinical need. A visit may include these steps.

  1. A talk about your concerns, how your child sees at home and at school, any glasses and family eye problems.
  2. A visual acuity check for each eye.
  3. Autorefraction, a machine measurement of how the eye focuses light, which helps detect nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism.
  4. A check of how the two eyes work together, so a squint or a lazy eye (amblyopia) is caught early.
  5. An examination of the fundus, the back of the eye.
  6. An OCT scan of the retina and optic nerve if needed. The Optovue RTVue XR Avanti scanner is right here at the center, so there is no need to go elsewhere for it.
  7. A plain-language explanation of the results and a clear plan, such as monitoring, glasses, treatment or a follow-up visit.

The doctor takes her time, explains each step to your child in simple words and leaves room for your questions.

If your child needs glasses, our optical shop can help you choose frames and lenses right after the exam. Read more about glasses fitting.

While they wait, children can color or do puzzles, and there is drinking water for everyone. The center has generators, a level -1 shelter with medical-standard ventilation for air raid alerts, step-free access and an accessible restroom.

Patient age

The children’s exam is for patients under 18, and from 18 the adult exam applies (from 800 UAH). Parents can have their own eyes checked at the same visit, so mention it when you book and we will find a time for the whole family. Read what the adult eye exam includes.

Eye checks before school

Reading, writing and screens add a lot of strain, so plan an exam before the school year and whenever you or a teacher notice a change. If your child wears glasses, the doctor will check that they still suit them. Children do not always tell you they see worse, so book an exam if your child:

  • sits close to screens or bends low over their notebook;
  • squints at the board or distant objects;
  • complains of tired eyes or headaches after lessons;
  • often rubs their eyes or tires quickly when reading;
  • has an eye that turns in or drifts outward.

A Sunday appointment suits schoolchildren especially well, because no lessons are missed.

Do not wait for a routine visit if your child has an eye injury, sudden pain, a very red eye or suddenly worse vision. Call us straight away on +380 97 729 45 05. Urgent eye care starts at 500 UAH, and for a serious injury call an ambulance on 103.

Vision therapy

Vision therapy at BINOCULAR runs under a doctor’s supervision at our center in Brovary. It is a non-surgical course of exercises on dedicated training devices and computer programs. The sessions train the eye muscles that control focusing, improve vision and relieve the eye strain that comes with school and screens.

For children with nearsightedness, the course is part of our myopia control program. Together with the glasses or lenses the doctor prescribes, it helps slow the progression of myopia, and the center measures eye length with a biometer so that progress shows up in numbers.

The center works with a macular stimulator, Amblyopanorama, ASO ZOOM, a synoptophore, a cheiroscope, OKOLO VISION and NeuroCore. The doctor prescribes the course after an exam, and it costs from 3,000 UAH. Learn more about vision therapy.
